Changing your locks after losing your keys

Unfortunately many of the flaws in our home security don't come directly from our locks, but from inadvertent loss of our keys. If you have recently had your bag lost or stolen, and your wallet or purse left with your keys your house is now vulnerable to being accessed by unwanted intruders who can easily gather your address from your driver's license. Here is how to regain your home security.

Get Your Home and Car Locks Replaced

As soon as you realise that your keys are lost, you should contact an emergency locksmith to get the house locks replaced. Make sure that any friends or family that you usually keep a spare key with have the updated version. This can be easy to forget but can be extremely annoying for both parties if they come to the house to let you in after an emergency lockout and you suddenly realised they

Place Your Spare Keys Somewhere Unlikely

While the best solution is to keep your spare keys somewhere else, it can sometimes be useful to keep spare keys on site in case you get locked out when checking the mail. Try and avoid the obvious 'fake rocks' and hiding keys under the matt or in the fuse box in favour or more unexpected locations such as hiding a key taped to the bottom of the dogs food bowl or in the bird feeder.

Your home and contents insurance will often cover the cost of getting new keys cut as a result of theft. An experienced locksmith, like those at Local Locksmiths, can help you regain a sense of personal security after the loss of your bag and keys.
